VALTREX Caplets are for oral administration. Each caplet contains valacyclovir hydrochloride equivalent to 500 mg or 1 gram valacyclovir and the inactive ingredients carnauba wax, colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, FD&C Blue No. 2 Lake, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, povidone, and titanium dioxide. The blue, film-coated caplets are printed with edible white ink.
ValacyclovirĀ is used to treat infections cause by certain types of viruses. In children, it is use to treatĀ cold soresĀ around theĀ mouthĀ (cause byĀ herpes simplex) andĀ chickenpoxĀ (cause by varicellaĀ zoster).
In adults, it is use to treatĀ shinglesĀ (cause byĀ herpes zoster) andĀ cold soresĀ around theĀ mouth.
Take valacyclovir byĀ mouth, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. Drink plenty of fluids while taking thisĀ medicationĀ to lower the chance of side effects.
The dosage and length of treatment are based on your type of infection, medical condition, and response to treatment. For treatingĀ chickenpoxĀ in children, the dosage is also based onĀ weight.
This medication works best when started at the first sign of an outbreak, as directed by your doctor. It may not work as well if you delay treatment. ForĀ shinglesĀ orĀ chickenpox, start taking valacyclovir at the first symptom or as soon as possible after theĀ rashĀ appears. ForĀ cold soresĀ orĀ genital herpes, start taking this medication at the first sign or as soon as you feel tingling,Ā itching, or burning.
